DEFINITION

The FoodBev SETA provides various pathways through which learners can progress to achieve  the same learning ends, i.e. full qualifications and skills programmes.

The FoodBev SETA is currently accredited for a total of 35 qualifications as drafted by the Food Standards Generating Body (SGB), all of which go through the processes of broad and narrow consultation to ensure that the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) principles of relevance and credibility are adhered with. These qualifications, which are registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), comprise unit standards against which employees can be trained and subsequently assessed to establish competence. Competent employees then receive credits registered on the National Learner Records Database (NLRD). Once competency is established on all unit standards comprised in the qualification, a certificate is awarded. Employees can also be trained and assessed on skills programmes, i.e. a cluster of the unit standards contained in any one of the 35 forementioned qualifications.

These skills programmes are registered by the FoodBev SETA and, because they comprise unit standards which are registered by SAQA, also result in those who are found to be competent receiving credits on the National Learner Records Database. A certificate is awarded once competency has been established in the unit standards comprising the relevant skills programme. There are however criteria which must be adhered with when applying for the registration of a skills programme. As previously mentioned, draft qualifications are taken through the processes of broad and narrow consultation during which comments on their content are requested before they are registered.

The attached feedback form can be used to submit comments to the FoodBev SETA on the contents of qualifications and / or unit standards after registration has taken place.
